🍁 What to Wear for Fall Family Photos: A Simple Guide for Your Northern Virginia Fall Mini Session

Fall Colors Family Photos

with Lotus Studio DC

Fall is one of my favorite times of year for family photography. 🍂 The changing leaves, warm colors, and cooler temperatures create a beautiful natural backdrop for family photos throughout Northern Virginia.

If you’ve booked one of my 2026 Fall Mini Sessions, you may be wondering: What should we wear?

The good news? You don’t need perfectly matching outfits or an elaborate wardrobe. My goal is to create images that feel natural, warm, timeless, and true to your family.

Here are some of my favorite tips for choosing outfits for your fall family photography session.

1. Start With a Color Palette Instead of Matching Outfits

One of the easiest ways to make your family photos look cohesive is to choose a color palette rather than putting everyone in the exact same color.

For fall photos, I love soft, earthy colors such as:

  • Cream and ivory
  • Beige and tan
  • Camel
  • Rust and terracotta
  • Warm brown
  • Olive and sage green
  • Dusty blue
  • Mustard
  • Burgundy
  • Soft blush

Think coordinating, not matching.

For example, Mom might wear a cream sweater dress, Dad could wear a neutral shirt with khaki pants, and the children could wear soft earth tones with subtle patterns.

The goal is for everyone’s outfits to work together without looking like a uniform.

2. Choose One Outfit to Build Around

If you’re not sure where to start, choose one outfit first.

Often, Mom’s outfit or a child’s outfit can become the starting point for the entire family’s color palette.

Once you choose that outfit, pull two or three complementary colors from it for everyone else.

For example:

Mom: Cream dress with subtle warm tones
Dad: Brown or olive sweater with neutral pants
Child: Rust sweater with beige pants
Baby: Cream or oatmeal-colored outfit

This creates visual harmony while allowing everyone to have their own personality.

3. Think About Texture

Texture photographs beautifully in fall.

Instead of relying on lots of patterns, incorporate different textures into your family’s outfits:

  • Knit sweaters
  • Linen
  • Corduroy
  • Denim
  • Wool
  • Quilted layers
  • Soft cotton
  • Knitted dresses

Textures add depth to photographs and work especially well with the natural textures of fall leaves, grass, and trees.

A chunky knit sweater paired with a flowing dress or denim is a great example of a simple fall combination.

4. Layers Are Your Friend

Northern Virginia weather can be unpredictable in the fall, so layers are both practical and beautiful in photographs.

Consider:

  • Cardigans
  • Lightweight sweaters
  • Denim jackets
  • Vests
  • Shawls
  • Blazers
  • Cozy jackets

Layers also give you the option to make a small outfit change during your session without completely changing everyone’s wardrobe.

And if the temperature drops, you’ll be glad you brought that extra layer!

5. Don’t Be Afraid of Dresses and Skirts

For moms and little girls, dresses and skirts can add beautiful movement to outdoor photographs.

Longer dresses can create a soft, flowing look when walking or moving through the leaves, while shorter dresses can create a playful feel for younger children.

You don’t have to choose a formal dress. A simple knit, cotton, or textured dress can photograph beautifully.

If dresses aren’t your style, that’s completely fine too. Jeans, trousers, sweaters, and layered outfits can look just as beautiful.

6. Keep Patterns Simple

Patterns aren’t off-limits, but I recommend being intentional with them.

If one family member wears a noticeable pattern, keep the other outfits relatively simple.

Good options include:

  • Small florals
  • Subtle stripes
  • Simple plaid
  • Minimal checks
  • Small textured patterns

Try to avoid having multiple people wearing large or competing patterns at the same time.

You want the focus to remain on your family—not the clothes.

7. Consider the Location

Your fall mini session will take place outdoors, surrounded by the natural colors of Northern Virginia.

Because the background already provides plenty of visual interest, neutral and earthy clothing tends to photograph beautifully.

Think about how your outfits will look against:

🍁 Golden leaves
🌿 Green and brown foliage
🌾 Grassy fields
🍂 Autumn pathways
🌳 Natural wooded backgrounds

Cream, beige, brown, rust, olive, and muted colors tend to blend beautifully with the fall environment while still allowing your family to stand out.

8. What About Shoes?

Don’t forget about footwear!

For outdoor fall sessions, comfortable shoes are usually the best choice. Depending on your outfit, consider:

  • Brown or tan boots
  • Ankle boots
  • Neutral sneakers
  • Loafers
  • Simple flats
  • Classic leather shoes

Try to avoid shoes with large logos or very bright colors unless they are intentionally part of your child’s outfit.

And remember—we may be walking around during your session, so comfort matters.

9. Avoid These Common Outfit Mistakes

A few things can make coordinating outfits more difficult than necessary.

I generally recommend avoiding:

  • Everyone wearing the exact same color
  • Large logos or prominent graphics
  • Neon colors
  • Too many competing patterns
  • Extremely bright white when photographing outdoors
  • Uncomfortable shoes
  • Clothing that makes children feel restricted or uncomfortable

Most importantly, don’t choose an outfit simply because it looks beautiful on Pinterest if it doesn’t feel like you.

Your photographs should still look like your family.

10. Dress for Your Child’s Personality

This is especially important for young children.

If your little one loves dresses, let her wear a dress.

If your toddler is happiest in pants and a sweater, go with that.

If your child loves a particular color, find a way to incorporate it into the outfit.

Children are much more likely to relax and interact naturally when they feel comfortable.

And those genuine smiles, laughs, cuddles, and little moments are exactly what I want to capture during your family session.

A Few Easy Fall Outfit Combinations

Need some inspiration? Here are a few simple combinations that work beautifully for family photos.

Neutral + Earthy

Mom: Cream dress
Dad: Tan pants + brown sweater
Child: Beige sweater + denim
Baby: Oatmeal knit outfit

Warm Autumn

Mom: Rust or terracotta dress
Dad: Olive sweater + khaki pants
Child: Cream top + brown pants
Baby: Beige or warm neutral

Soft & Classic

Mom: Dusty blue dress
Dad: Cream sweater + dark denim
Child: Soft beige dress or sweater
Baby: Cream knit outfit

Casual & Natural

Mom: Neutral sweater + jeans
Dad: Earth-tone shirt + jeans
Children: Coordinating sweaters, denim, and neutral pants

Most Importantly: Don’t Overthink It

Your fall family photos don’t need to look perfect.

They need to look like your family.

I want you to be able to look back years from now and remember the way your children laughed, the way they held your hand, and the little personalities they had at this exact stage of life.

So choose clothing that makes your family feel comfortable and confident, coordinate your colors, add a little texture, and then let me take care of the rest.
