Mini session vs Regular Session - What's the difference? | Lotus Studio DC, DC Area Photographer

1 | Session Length

The biggest difference is the time.

Family mini sessions are about 15-20 minutes, which is enough time to capture a handful of great poses and a few different shots. Minis are perfect if you’re looking for something quick, simple, and focused on portraits.

A full session is about 60 minutes, which gives us a lot more time to relax, move around, and capture a wider variety of moments. These tend to feel more natural and lifestyle-focused, and we can be more creative with the session.

2 | Location

With mini sessions, the location is usually chosen by the photographer. Minis are typically scheduled at a specific spot and on set dates.

With full sessions, you usually get more flexibility and can help choose the location (within a reasonable travel distance). Full sessions are also generally easier to schedule since they’re available on more dates and times.

Some photographers only offer minis once or twice a year at special locations, like sunflower fields, beaches, or city spots.

3 | Number of Photos

For a family mini, you’ll receive a smaller gallery and choose your favorite images to be edited and delivered.

For a full session, you’ll receive 50+ images, which reflects the extra time we spend capturing a bigger variety of moments and poses.

4 | Price

Because minis are shorter and include fewer photos, they’re typically less expensive than full sessions.

Full sessions cost more, but you’re also getting more time, more flexibility, and more photos. I like to compare it to shopping at Costco, you pay a little more upfront, but you get a lot more in return.

Minis can also be a great option if you’ve been wanting to work with a photographer but aren’t ready to invest in a full session just yet.
