Wondering what to wear for your newborn session? You’re not alone.
One of the questions I hear most often from new moms is, “What should I wear for newborn photos?” And honestly, after everything your body has been through over the past nine months, that question makes complete sense.
This season is tender, emotional, beautiful, and exhausting all at once. While you’re adjusting to life with your new baby and giving your body time to heal, choosing an outfit can feel overwhelming. You deserve to feel comfortable, confident, and beautiful in these memories.
To make things easier, I’m sharing few simple tips to help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully while still feeling natural and comfortable during this special season.
Tip #1: First and foremost, moms should wear something that makes them feel beautiful and comfortable (after all.. you just had a little one!). The best advice really is to keep it simple.
This is a season where you might not quite feel like yourself. That’s OK! A fresh outfit you feel good in will go a long way. Pick an outfit for newborn photos that makes you feel good in the moment you are in.
On a budget? Start in your own closet. What do you already love that fits these guidelines? Want to splurge a bit? Start early and order a few options so you have time to try things on and return or exchange if needed. Maybe you want to feel elevated in a dress, or keep it relaxed with a flowy top and jeans. Leggings with a chunky sweater can be just as beautiful. Choose what feels like you, what feels comfortable, and build from there.
Dresses look stunning and flatter every body type.
Tip #2: Being relaxed is important, so pick an outfit for newborn photos that feels good against your skin and moves easily with your body. Cotton, linen, silk and cashmere are natural fibers that will feel decadent against your skin and put you at ease. I’ve found longer dresses, that are nursing friendly, are often the most flattering during this season of motherhood.
I have also gathered a few fun outfit ideas from some of my favorite shops, Quince, Old Navy, and Pink Blush.
When picking clothes, I recommend keeping in mind the word “complement” rather than “match.” A good rule of thumb: pick three colors and spread them throughout the family. I always suggest trying to stick with softer and neutral tones. We want the focus to be on your baby and the connection, rather than bright clothing. Often red, bright pinks and neon colors can cast unflattering colors onto the skin which I why I don’t often recommend those particular colors.
Don’t be afraid to mix a few subtle patterns or textures to add a layer of interest.
Tip #3: Solid-colored tops and long sleeve tops are preferred as they allow the pictures to focus on connection. Avoid large logos.
Tip #4: Wear colored denim or chino pants. Avoid shorts or work pants.
Tip #5: Wear a solid shirt that compliments mom’s top. A subtle pattern on dad’s shirt can add interest.
No matter how old the sibling is, the main goal is to make them comfortable.
Tip #6: Pick comfortable clothing for younger children. This will help them feel relaxed for the photos.
Tip #7: Coordinate colors with the parent’s wardrobe. A light-colored top on the siblings helps in creating an angelic and sweet look.
Remember, these are all just suggestions and what I see best for photos. The most important thing is I want you to feel comfortable in your outfit for newborn photos. Pick what is best for you! Each family is unique and different.. so don’t be afraid to break “the rules.” As long as you are comfortable and feel gorgeous, let your style shine through!
