One of the questions I get asked the most is, what should we wear for our photoshoot?
I have a few simple guidelines I love sharing, and I have also put together some of my favorite outfit ideas from shops I personally love to help you get started planning your Motherhood photoshoot looks. These are not strict rules, just helpful guidance to support your personal style while choosing pieces that photograph beautifully.
When planning outfits for the whole family, I always suggest coordinating rather than matching. Start with a shared color palette (See page 6 from my Family Session Prep Guide) , then bring it to life with a mix of solids and a few subtle patterns. You might lean into soft, muted tones, neutrals with one intentional pop of color, or a floral dress for mom and pull colors from that pattern for everyone else. I have even seen black and white done beautifully.
The key is balance. Avoid too many competing patterns and steer clear of overly bright or neon colors, as they can cast unflattering tones on skin in photos.
Since loud patterns and bold colors can be tricky to coordinate, I always encourage leaning into texture instead. Look for pretty details rather than simple, stiff cuts. If everyone is wearing neutrals, bring interest through fabrics like lace, embroidery, chunky knits, or pieces that naturally move.
Women, this part matters so much. Choose clothing that flows and drapes, creating soft movement in your photos. It photographs beautifully, feels comfortable, and is incredibly flattering. Think about your inner little girl who wants to dance and twirl. I promise, it makes a huge difference.
Mama, even if you do not always feel like it, you are the star of the show. Chances are you are the one who made this Motherhood session happen, so this is your permission to spoil yourself a little. I always want to give extra love and attention to the mamas because I am one too, and I know how hard this season can be.
You deserve to look back at these photos and truly love them, so start with your outfit first. Kids are easy. They look adorable in just about anything. When you choose your outfit first, it gives you a clear starting point for coordinating everyone else.
On a budget? Start in your own closet. What do you already love that fits these guidelines? Want to splurge a bit? Start early and order a few options so you have time to try things on and return or exchange if needed. Maybe you want to feel elevated in a dress, or keep it relaxed with a flowy top and jeans. Leggings with a chunky sweater can be just as beautiful. Choose what feels like you, what feels comfortable, and build from there.

I truly love capturing mamas breastfeeding their babies, only if you are comfortable with it, of course. If nursing is part of your season right now, it is something to keep in mind when choosing your outfit for your Motherhood session. You will want pieces that are easy to nurse in and do not require fully undressing.

Once your outfit is set, it is time to think about the kids. Comfort comes first, always. Every child has preferences, and as moms we know exactly what they will and will not wear.
These are guidelines, not rules. An uncomfortable outfit can mean fewer smiles and snuggles, and my goal is to capture your genuine connection. Start with what is already in their closet, or look for soft, easy pieces from brands you love.

Logos can be distracting, so I recommend avoiding them when possible. That said, if your child is in a phase where it is Mickey Mouse, Hello Kitty, or princess everything, that tells their story right now, and that matters too. Those little details become part of the memories, and yes, they may even come in handy as future bargaining power.

At the end of the day, here is the truth. What you wear matters far less than how you feel. These guidelines exist simply to answer the questions I am asked most often. My sessions are relaxed and playful, and I focus on your love and connection with your children. A calm mama, genuine smiles, and a good attitude will always matter more than perfectly coordinated outfits. Come as you are, bring your best energy, and know that it is all welcome.
